Practice Description As a nurse practitioner, I understand mental health problems are not confined to the brain and cognition, but exist as whole body phenomena rooted in both biology and experience. I approach treatment with deep respect for my clients' innate resources and coping strategies, however inadequate or ineffective these may appear to be. It is my experience that problematic thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in some way have played an important role in the individual's adaptation and survival. Thus, in treatment, I emphasize mindfulness and curiosity as we learn together the wisdom of the mind/body and how to facilitate its natural tendency toward better functioning. I believe that there are many windows through which healing and change can be facilitated. For this reason, I learn what I can about human nature and healing from many traditions and disciplines. I have a very eclectic approach to treatment that incorporates wisdom learned through nursing, medicine, various psychotherapy traditions, Eastern traditions, and more. My approach emphasizes mindfulness, while teaching what I have learned to empower my clients with greater self-knowledge, better understanding of human nature, and developing the skills to support their health and well-being on many levels. Frequently treatment includes processing experiences that have not been fully processed, including childhood traumas and other obstacles to development. In this, my approach is mostly drawn from sensorimotor psychotherapy which emphasizes the Hakomi Principles.
