Description Of Practice

Monica's approach to counseling can be described as eclectic. She utilizes a multitude of therapeutic approaches: cognitive behavioral, solution-focused, psychodynamic, existential, behavioral or family systems therapy depending on the individual needs of her clients. Monica can be best described as a caring and warm therapist. She works closely with her clients to assist them in a supportive manner to take steps towards living the life that they want and deserve. She believes that one of the most important components of psychotherapy is having an atmosphere which is supportive, patient, validating and compassionate.
In the past years, Monica has been focusing her experience and love for counseling to the marital and relationship field. She has been trained with the PAIRS foundation (Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills); and has been leading marriage counseling seminars in Spanish to assist couples to learn practical everyday day skills to deepen their relationships through communication and connection. She has attended the Smart Marriages conferences in 2006 & 2007 to train with the pioneers of the marriage counseling field to provide couples with cutting edge research and well- proven techniques. In her work with couples, she focuses on strengthening communication skills, resolving conflicts, repairing wounds and hurts, deepening intimacy, and ultimately enhancing her clients' overall relationship satisfaction.

In her work with individuals, she utilizes psychodynamic skills which focus mainly on family of origin issues. Monica believes that we all are products of a lifetime of conditioning, beginning with families of origin. This conditioning can have a negative impact on adult relationships as well as self-concept. She assists her clients to understand their underlying patterns and how to change them to achieve healthier relationships and a more satisfying life.

Additional Information

Monica credits her Hispanic roots for her unique ability to address and understand issues related to the Hispanic culture; including immigration and assimilation. She empowers her clients to resolve feelings of guilt, shame, loneliness and isolation that can be experienced by new immigrants. She often conducts individual and marriage counseling sessions in her native language (Spanish) which allows her clients to work through their acculturation process with someone who understands their culture, values and traditions.
