Description Of Practice
I believe that people engage in addictive or compulsive behaviors in an attempt to self-medicate. Frequently, addicts will self- medicate for disorders like anxiety or depression, feelings associated with upsetting experiences like trauma, guilt or shame and stress. Recent medical studies show that sex addiction and other compulsive behaviors look much the same as drug addiction in the brain. Therefore, it is important to treat addiction as both a medical problem and a behavioral problem. I employ cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic therapies, psychoeducation and EMDR to treat the trauma and abuse that are often closely linked to addiction.
