Nutrition Counseling For Mental Health
Nutrition choices can influence behavior, mood, and emotional states. For example, someone who is hungry can feel ill-tempered and anxious or depressed. In comparison a person who has eaten a good meal is more likely to feel happy and satisfied. Caffeine in coffee can make us more alert and studies have shown that coffee in moderation can improve performance under some circumstances. Too much coffee can cause anxiety and lead to "caffeinism". Caffeinism is a term used to describe the adverse symptoms caused by consuming excessive caffeine. These symptoms include anxiety, restlessness, gastrointestinal symptoms and insomnia. The bottom line is that humans, like cars need gasoline to run the brain engine. The mind won't work very well unless it gets the right gasoline to keep it fueled. (Naturopath Nutrition Counseling For Mental Health)

Specific nutrients are required for brain nerve cells to create substances called "neurotransmitters. Brain nerve cells require neurotransmitters to communicate with each other and therefore allow us to think, feel, and move. Without proper nutrition these neurotransmitters won't be properly created and our brain cells won't be able to function. (Nutrition Counseling For Mental Health Naturopath )

Nutritional aspects of mental health can be broken down into several areas. The total amount of energy or calories, vitamin content, fatty acid content and protein content. In addition to the nutritional factors already mentioned one must also take into account nutritional content which can have a negative impact on mental health. For example, alcohol has a direct toxic effect on brain function but in addition to this alcohol provides calories without nutritional content. Those consuming significant amounts of alcohol may not eat properly depriving their bodies of important nutrients.(Naturopath Nutrition Counseling For Mental Health)

In summary, what we choose, or don't choose to eat can have a major impact on how well we feel, think and function. Nutritional counseling and or Naturopathic counseling can help us to learn how to best feed our mind. Family physicians, nutritionists, dieticians, fitness instructors and naturopaths can be of great value in steering us in the right direction. (Naturopath, Nutrition Counseling For Mental Health)

In future articles we will discuss different nutrients and how they might either be helpful or harmful to our minds. (Naturopath Nutrition Counseling For Mental Health)
