Description Of Practice
Whenever possible, all family members living in the home and/or those concerned with the problem are invited to sessions to better assess each individual’s perspective on the problem. Then family members can work with the therapist to design specific attainable goals with an “end in mind.” The partnership with a trained, objective party that joins with your family to assist you in finding a solution that will work for your family is quite helpful when facing a wide range of problems. If you have run into a “dead end” with a problem you are facing with your spouse, child, or life circumstances, working with a therapist may be helpful.
Many people do not like the idea of coming to therapy because they think it means their family is “dysfunctional” or “damaged.” The idea that healthy families are problem-free is a myth. All families and individuals struggle with the challenges life brings them. The only thing anyone can do is build resilience by learning to “struggle well.” A healthy family is able to integrate the fullness of a crisis into the fabric of their individual and collective identity. Stressful experiences influence how they go on and live their lives by leaving them strengthened and more resourceful. Sometimes families need outside help from a therapist in order to weather the storm.
